Let's face it

Hello from the Kingdom of Kerry

I am currently enjoying some fun and relaxation with my family, and it feels so good. I was all set to chat with you guys about an entirely different subject matter this week, but then these images of real skin came into my perimeter, and I had to share and celebrate. I am over 25 years in a treatment room, skin problem solving, educating and empowering clients. Thankfully my career has not been born out of a social media wave. It brings so much more security and confidence to know you were winning awards and changing lives before you ever had followers. I believe social media just provided me with a free space to display my work.

As much as I like to think social media hasn't changed me, it has had a tremendous influence on my clients. I constantly reiterate that skin is an organ, and skin health should be your goal. Social media keeps pushing back with filtered, inanimate images of skin, smoothing over its normal and healthy characteristics like pores, lines and texture and bombarding messages of instant resolutions to skin problems that don't exist.

I recently shared a clients disappointment with her after an injectable procedure carried out by a dentist on her skin. Sold to her on the basis that it would make her skin glow for her daughter's upcoming wedding. As I had her on my couch before and had taken photos of her skin, I could accurately access what changes had come about post-procedure. My client was €600 worse off, had a huge bruise on her face, and instead of a promised glow, her cheeks appeared more swollen. That was the only difference. Oh and it hurt a lot.

Healthy skin is a choice you make every day, every time you apply SPF and reapply SPF every 2 hours. Every time you choose a colour other than white on your plate and feed your body an antioxidant. Every time you apply antioxidants to your skin, Vit A, C and E. To limit the effects that day has had on your skin. Skin health can not be injected into your skin and cant be obtained by photoshop.

Healthy skin is looking in the mirror and loving what looks back at you. Pores, texture, pigmentation, lines and wrinkles are all symptoms of healthy skin. The very best thing you can do for your skin is to nourish it and protect it. Aim for a skin that will age beautifully with the gift of time. Invest your budget in feeding your skin topically and orally. And if you have a surplus budget and wish to add volume, opt for fillers or treatments like profhilo . Alternatively, if genetics means developing deep lines from facial expression, then a neurotoxin like Botox will soften them.

Isn't it time we stopped aspiring for glass skin and begin to love the skin we are in!

Bian Stone Gua Sha Tools

Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation. Rubbing the skin's surface is thought to help break up this energy, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. Our Bian stone gua sha tools offers an amalgamation of 40+ minerals known for their healing properties.

Each edge of the tool is intentionally architected to enhance the practice of facial gua sha. Known for its rejuvenating properties, Bian stone was created when a meteor struck a mountain in ancient China. It is said to emit ultrasound pulsations, far infrared rays, and negative ions as a result of the cosmic impact — all of which are known for their antioxidant and anti-ageing effects on cells and DNA.

Our Bian stones can be used on any body area, excellent for cellulite and fluid retention. The U edge perfectly hugs the angels of the jaw, cheekbones, brow bones and the back of the neck over the spine. The Comb edge moves energy and invigorates the flat surfaces of the face to stimulate flow. The short edge, a perfectly flat surface to stimulate under the eye and sinuses. The pointed tip is to stimulate acupuncture points on the face that store tension. The long edge, ideal for long strokes on the side and front of the neck and underneath cheekbones.

Hi there, My name is Karla and I start working in Monica Tolan's in August 2020. I studied Beauty Therapy for 2 years in Senior College Dun Laoghaire, where I got my CIBTAC and CIDESCO certificates. I have 15 years experience in the beauty industry.

Working in Monica Tolan has been like no other salon experience and has been an amazing opportunity to continue to grow as a therapist and learn. The level of training and guidance I have received since starting is second to none and something I have never experienced before. Getting to work with medical grade skincare every day is a dream come true for me as skincare and facial treatments have always been what I'm most passionate about.

I am so grateful to come to work everyday to work with the best skincare brands, but most importantly an amazing inspiring and supportive environment!!! Xxx
